Tallinn, Estonia & Helsinki, Finland by Ferry: Medieval Charm Meets Nordic Cool

This short but memorable trip combined the fairy-tale medieval streets of Tallinn with the design-forward, harbor-side energy of Helsinki. Connected by a scenic ferry ride across the Baltic Sea, it’s an ideal quick escape for history lovers, foodies, and anyone who enjoys walkable cities with stunning views. We focused on old town exploration in Tallinn and a relaxed harbor-to-park day in Helsinki

Getting There & Practical Info

  • Ferry Tallinn → Helsinki: Comfortable and frequent (typically 2–3 hours). Popular operators include Tallink Silja or Viking Line. Book in advance for the best prices and scenic departures.
  • Tallinn: Stay central near the Old Town for easy walking.
  • Helsinki: Base yourself near the harbor or Esplanadi for convenience.
  • Best time: May–September for milder weather and longer daylight. Public transport is excellent in both cities (get a Tallinn Card or Helsinki travel card if visiting multiple sights) but I took uber, which was decently priced in both cities.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Tallinn, Estonia: Medieval Old Town Exploration

Walking tour in order: Viru Gate, St.Catherine’s Passage, Caffe Carissimi Kohvik, Maestrite Hoov, Raekoja Plats, Old Estonia Restaurant, Patkuli Viewing Platform.

I arrived in the late morning and started my tour at Viru Gate, the iconic entrance to the walled Old Town. Then I wandered through St. Catherine’s Passage, a charming medieval alley with artisan workshop, and stopped at Caffe Carissimi Kohvik for a coffee and pastry. Next I strolled through the charming Meistrite Hoov (Masters’ Courtyard) and headed to Raekoja Plats (Town Square) for an early Estonian dinner with a view of the Town Hall at Old Estonia Restaurant. I sat outside in the brisk November weather, drank hot tea, and ate their blood sausages, which were absolutely tasty. After my meal I walked to the Patkuli Viewing Platform for picture perfect fairytale views right around sunset. Tired from travel I decided to walk back to my hotel to get a good night of sleep before my early ferry ride in the morning.

Optional: Relax in the evening in Old Town, perhaps with local craft beer.

Day 2 – Day Trip via Ferry to Helsinki, Finland for Harbor Highlights

  • Ferry crossing (2–3 hours) – wake up early and enjoy sea views and onboard cafés.
  • Walking tour of highlights in Helsinki.
  • Return to Tallinn

Walking tour in order: St.John’s Church, Design District, Esplanadi, Helsinki Cathedral, Senate Square, lunch at Restaurant Savotta, Kauppatori (Old Market Square), Uspneski Cathedral, Johan & Nystrom Kanavaranta

The ferry from Tallinn arrives at West Harbour in Helsinki. I arrived around 10 AM and got an Uber to St. John’s Church to start my tour. I walked around the Design District enjoying the architecture and window shopping on my way to Esplanadi, a beautiful park in the city. My next stop was Helsinki Cathedral, Senate Square, and lunch at Restaurant Savotta. The Finnish restaurant has great views of Helsinki Cathedral and offers fresh delicious Finnish food in a historic setting. After lunch I went straight to Kauppatori (Old Market Square) for harbor views and souvenirs. I walked uphill to visit Uspenski Cathedral and see the excellent city panoramas available at the top. I finished my time in Helsinki with a coffee break at Johan & Nystrom Kanavaranta for a delicious beverage and gorgeous harbor views before heading back to the port to catch my ferry to Tallinn. I arrived late in Tallinn, grabbed a late night burger at Grill ja Prius Vanalinn, and headed back to my hotel.

Day 3 – Last day in Estonia

  • Visit Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (stunning Russian Orthodox architecture).
  • Explore Lossi Plats, Kirku Plats, Danish King’s Garden, & Commanders Garden area.

For my last day on my weekend trip I grabbed breakfast at Kofeman Cafe/Wine, walked around Tallinn, and shopped. First stop was Vabaduse Valjak (Freedom Square), and exploring nearby Commanders Garden, castle walls, Maiden Tower Museum-Cafe, and the Danish King’s Garden. It is a beautiful and historic area that is definitely worth a visit.

Optional: Climb St. Olaf’s Church tower if time and energy allow.

Worth it in Tallinn

  • Old Town & Viru Gate – Fairytale medieval UNESCO site.
  • Raekoja Plats (Town Square) – Heart of the city with lively atmosphere.
  • Alexander Nevsky Cathedral – Ornate Orthodox masterpiece.
  • Patkuli Viewing Platform – Best panoramic views over red rooftops.
  • Danish King’s Garden & Commanders Garden areas.

Worth it in Helsinki

  • Kauppatori Market Square – Vibrant harbor market.
  • Uspenski Cathedral – Iconic red-brick landmark with views.
  • Senate Square – Neoclassical beauty and photo spot.
  • Esplanadi Park – Green lung of the city for relaxing strolls.

Wasted

  • Tallinn: Freedom Square was my least favorite stop on my tour. It is more modern and lacks the medieval charm the rest of the city has to offer.
  • Helsinki: If you need to save time and think the walk is too long, skip St. John’s Church & the Design District. It was an enjoyable walk for me, but you wouldn’t be missing much.

Local Food & Drink to Try

  • Estonia (Tallinn): Estonian black bread, kama (toasted grain dessert), Baltic herring, sausages, and craft beer. Try local honey or juniper-infused spirits.
  • Finland (Helsinki): Salmon soup (lohikeitto), reindeer or elk dishes, rye bread, fresh market berries, and karjalanpiirakka (rice pies). Coffee culture is huge—pair with cinnamon buns (korvapuusti). Savotta is excellent for traditional Finnish fare.

Tips & Recommendations

This Tallinn–Helsinki combo is one of the easiest and most rewarding short ferry trips in Europe. The contrast between Tallinn’s medieval charm and Helsinki’s modern Nordic design makes it unforgettable.

  • Book ferry tickets in advance, especially for cabins if traveling with luggage.
  • Tallinn’s Old Town is compact and best explored on foot—wear comfortable shoes for cobblestones.
  • In Helsinki, the market square is a great spot for affordable lunches. Download city apps for transport.
  • Combine with a longer Baltic itinerary or use as a side trip from Northern Europe.
